TaylorMade debuts MG4 wedges with Spin Tread technology

TaylorMade today announced the latest iteration of its Milled Grind wedges: TaylorMade MG4, which we spotted a few months back on the PGA Tour. Rory McIlroy presently has the wedges in play, as does Collin Morikawa.

What’s new in the fourth generation of Milled Grind? Most significantly: grooves. TaylorMade engineers are hanging their hats on all-new, tire-inspired Spin Tread technology, in which deep laser etching between the grooves offers an escape route for moisture in wet conditions. When combined with a raw face, this results in more spin and a more controlled launch, according to the company.

“This is a major step forward in the progression of the Milled Grind family. With MG4 we have evolved our approach to wet spin and developed an all-new Spin Tread technology. We use a laser etching treatment to create face roughness, which translates to better friction and moisture channeling for optimal ball control, especially on partial shots.” – Bill Price, TaylorMade’s Senior Director of Product Creation, Putter & Wedge

Increased flange thickness: Engineers refined the geometry to improve sound and feel on shots struck across the face.

Improved looks, shaping: Inspired by tour player feedback, the reshaped top line, more rounded leading edge, and hosel blend more smoothly and look more “full.” Additionally, the finish features a slightly darker tint that is designed to look better with the oxidizing raw face.

As with the previous generation MG3 wedges, the MG4 wedge faces are raw, and soles are fully machined.

“The feel component is a significant factor. By replacing the chrome-plated face with raw finishes early in the Milled Grind evolution, we were able to influence spin and also enhance the overall feel of the wedge. Adding our reconstructed backbar, with more weight positioned directly behind the strike zone, allows us to help players achieve their desired shot trajectories and spin rates with premium feel and confidence.” – Greg Cesario, TaylorMade Wedge Design Team

In addition to the standard three bounce options available in previous generations — low bounce (LB), standard bounce (SB) and high bounce (HB) — TaylorMade is offering alternative options within each category for the MG4 wedges.

Once again, TaylorMade is offering custom options via its “My” program.

My MG4 includes custom finish, paint fill, engraving, and logo options. The four finishes include: black, chrome, aged copper, and raw.

There are 15 different paint fill options (White, Black, Tour Red, Silver, Gold, Pink, Yellow, Green, Orange, Purple, Lime Green, Blue, Light Blue, Midnight Blue, and Golf Ball Yellow).

MyMG4 also offers further personalization by selecting from more than 50 logos and a variety of placement options, as well as utilizing dancing text to spell out a seven-character phrase with an adjoining logo. Golfers may also choose to position repeating initials diagonally along the toe.

MyMG4 is available via the TaylorMade website for $229.99.

Two weeks ago, we highlighted Fujikura and the success of Ventus on the PGA Tour, and as one of the most popular shaft lineups in golf. Before that, we talked about Fuji’s new Axiom iron shafts, and saw our members and GolfWRX’s own Brian Knudson getting fit into Axiom.

In this video, we talked with Spencer Reynolds of Fujikura Golf about the other shaft lineups the company offers that are sometimes overlooked. Fujikura offers a wide-ranging shaft lineup for golfers with different skill levels, profiles, or even desired price points. These options include the Vista Pro series, an entry-level option within the Fujikura catalog. Spencer goes on to detail Motore X, Ventus, Axiom, and the Speeder NX series of shafts.

Tune in above to see which Fujikura shaft might be the best fit for you.

At GolfWRX, we are a community of like-minded individuals that all experience and express our enjoyment of the game in many ways.

It’s that sense of community that drives day-to-day interactions in the forums on topics that range from best driver to what marker you use to mark your ball. It even allows us to share another thing we all love – buying and selling equipment.

Currently, in our GolfWRX buy/sell/trade (BST) forum, there is a listing for a set of Mizuno JPX 923 Tours (4-PW).

From the seller (@Kroy915): “Got fit for these and it turns out I’m #NotThatGuyPal. Fun experiment but nonetheless these are better off in someone’s hands who plays a lot more golf than I’m going to play in the next few years. They’ve been through 3 rounds and a few range sessions and are in mint condition. JPX 923 Tour 4-PW, Project X 6.5, Factory bent 2 degrees upright (Mizunos are traditionally flatter at standard spec) with Golf Pride Tour Velvet Grips.
